AI Design Concept: Design For The Senses

Junior Spring 2023

This design concept was researched and studied thoroughly before being brought to life with the help of MidJourney AI. All of the images seen with project are AI generated through prompts that were created to help bring this concept to life. The design concept is centered around Bruce Mau’s sustainability principles. Design For the Senses is a principle that studies the idea that most architecture these days is designed exclusively for our visual senses. Many of our other senses though, play a bigger role in how we perceive these spaces. Creating spaces that are stimulating to all of our senses is something that is not only good, but is something that is necessary for our brains to grow. Alliesthesia is varying sensory stimulation. What the brain craves is stimulation of the senses and you want that stimulation to vary throughout the day. The same thing all day long no matter what it is, is bad for you.

Nature is known to be one of the best stimulants for your brain, and immersion within nature stimulates the five sensory systems which increase activities in one's parasympathetic nervous system. heightened This awareness, leads to eventually resulting in a state of relaxation. So the concept that was created for this house was to promote maximum integration of the inside environment with the surrounding outdoor environment. The intention is to awaken different sensations in occupants through natural materials, textures, lighting, ventilation, and vegetation, combined with organic and rounded shapes that instinctively connect us to the environment. This concept of integration was also explored through fluid spaces that communicate with each other. The spaces within the house were subtly compartmentalized to avoid abrupt visual barriers. Open spaces effect our direct experience of seasonality and the dynamic of seasonal change. Open spaces stimulate our multi-sensory perceptions including sights, smells, sounds, and the haptic touch of seasonal markers. This includes ambient temperatures, wind, breezes, sunshine, moonlight, shade and shadow, humidity, rainfall, snow, ice, flowing water, and more. Being within this space throughout the course of the year gives us the opportunity to experience the seasonal cycle of the space. By incorporating natural elements, such as wood, stone, wool, leather, and plants, into the interior architecture, this helps to keep the mind stimulated throughout the different parts of the day. The aluminum frames of the windows have a special mechanism that function as pivoting sunshades. This was done because our bodies and minds are deeply affected by circadian rhythm, or our biological clock, so understanding the role of light in an environment is crucial for the user's comfort. This is also key to improving people's mood and energy levels, which directly affects their appetite, motivation, and one’s ability to focus.
